FAQ
Quick answers
The questions people ask first.
Zakat rate
The standard Zakat rate is 2.5% (or 1/40th) of your zakatable wealth.
Applies to:
- Cash and savings
- Gold and silver
- Business inventory
- Investment income
Different rates:
- Agriculture: 5-10% (depends on irrigation)
- Minerals: 20%
- Rikaz (treasure): 20%
And Allah knows best.
Who can receive zakat
Zakat can be given to 8 categories (Quran 9:60):
1. Al-Fuqara - The poor
2. Al-Masakin - The needy
3. Administrators of Zakat
4. New Muslims (hearts to be reconciled)
5. Freeing captives (historically slaves)
6. Those in debt (unable to pay)
7. In Allah's cause (Islamic work)
8. Stranded travelers
Cannot give to:
- Your parents/grandparents
- Your children/grandchildren
- Your spouse
- Non-Muslims (majority view)
And Allah knows best.
Zakat on salary
Zakat on salary/income:
Correct method:
1. Save monthly from your salary
2. Calculate Zakat on total savings after one year
3. NOT on gross monthly salary
Common mistake:
Don't pay Zakat on each paycheck!
Example:
- Starting savings: 100,000
- Monthly savings: 20,000
- After 1 year: 340,000
- Zakat: 340,000 × 2.5% = 8,500
Only pay on what remains after expenses.
And Allah knows best.
Zakat on debt
How debt affects Zakat:
Deduct immediate debts (due within year):
- Credit card balances
- Short-term loans
- Unpaid bills
Do NOT deduct:
- Long-term mortgages
- Car loans (unless due this year)
- Business loans (separate calculation)
Formula:
(Total Assets - Immediate Debts) × 2.5%
If total after debts < Nisab, no Zakat due!
And Allah knows best.
Zakat on house
Property & Real Estate Zakat:
No Zakat on:
- Your primary residence (family home)
- Personal vacation home (if not rented)
Zakat IS due on:
- Investment properties for resale
- Rental income (add to zakatable wealth)
- Commercial real estate (if for resale)
For rental properties:
Pay Zakat on the rental income saved, not the property value itself.
Property appreciation is not zakatable unless you intend to sell.
And Allah knows best.
Zakat on car
No, you do NOT pay Zakat on personal-use vehicles.
Zakat NOT due on:
- Personal car for daily use
- Family home
- Personal clothing
- Work tools
Zakat IS due on:
- Cars used for business (taxi, rental)
- Investment vehicles for resale
- Spare vehicles as investment
And Allah knows best.
